Increase understanding of Civil Service policies and rules affecting hiring, attendance, use of vacation, sick, and personal leaves, approved and unapproved absences and discipline policies, etc. on campus.

Academic Employment Policies
Managers and supervisors have the opportunity to clarify Academic policies on a wide range of topics such as use of vacation and sick leave policies; sabbatical, medical and personal leaves; assignment of duties—particularly in periods of non-reappointment; and discipline policies. Academic Employee Performance Management
This program reviews relevant policies and procedures, discusses the common mistakes made when conducting performance reviews, and provides some demonstrations on how to begin the discussion between the supervisor and the employee. Civil Service Employee Performance Management
Provides a framework for effective performance management of Civil Service staff including linking the employee’s work with the department’s goals and objectives, coaching for results, positive recognition, evaluation, and discipline. Academic Recruitment, Selection and Hiring
Representatives from Academic Human Resources and the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access will help new supervisors learn how to effectively utilize University employment systems to recruit, select, and hire staff in Academic Professional and Faculty member employment categories. Thursday, December 3, 2009

Civil Service Selection, Hiring, and Promotion
Supervisors will learn how to effectively utilize University employment systems to select and hire staff in the Civil Service employment category. An overview of the job classification systems and salary considerations will be offered. The session will also address the process for internally promoting and reclassifying individuals. Citizen Public Safety Academy for Supervisors and Managers
Participants will be acquainted with and equipped to contact key campus units to address concerns and make referrals on a range of issues, including campus crisis situations, crime prevention, and emergency planning tools. Wednesday, October 14, 2009 or Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Contemporary Issues in the Workplace
Participants will be acquainted with a range of issues affecting supervisors and managers nationwide and at the University of Illinois.  Topics include employee generational differences and the supervisor’s role in creating a healthy workplace.   Thursday, January 28, 2010 or Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Leadership and Diversity: A Practical Approach for the Workplace
Designed to provide guidance to managers and supervisors on issues related to the working environment and workplace diversity. It will address the topics of diversity, harassment, discrimination, and disability accommodation. This session will provide specific tools to assist with the management of an inclusive workforce.  Wednesday, December 9, 2009 or Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Recognizing the Troubled Employee
Oftentimes employees—including student employees—have personal concerns, which may affect the workplace.  This may be revealed by declining work performance, absenteeism, mistakes or poor judgment, changes in their appearance, a high accident rate, or inappropriate behavior.  Led by the Faculty Staff Assistance Program, Counseling Center, and Staff Human Resources, this session assists participants in identifying a troubled employee, documenting job performance, and referring the employee to the appropriate resource.  Specific concerns affecting employment and referrals for student workers will also be covered.  Tuesday, October 13, 2009, Thursday, November 12, 2009, Thursday, December 10, 2009, Wednesday, February 24, 2010 or Tuesday, June 8, 2010 (choose only one)

All workshops are held at the Levis Faculty Center, 919 W. Illinois St., Urbana.  Workshops begin promptly at 9:00am. Parking in this area of campus is limited.  Parking fees are the responsibility of the participant.

Substance Abuse in the Workplace
The Faculty/Staff Assistance Program and Campus Human Resource offices are presenting a joint training about substance abuse in the workplace.  The training will educate supervisors on how to address an impaired employee and the impact they have in the workplace.  Campus policies and procedures presented by Human Resources and how to consult with the Faculty/Staff Assistance Program are included in the training.  The training is for Deans, Directors, Department Heads, administrators, managers, supervisors and foremen. December 11, 2009 or April 14, 2010
